Kraken Partners With Mesh to Enable Address-Free Crypto Deposits From External Exchanges
17 August 2026

Kraken has partnered with Mesh to introduce a direct exchange-to-exchange deposit method, eliminating the need for manual wallet address entry. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant shift toward interoperability in the digital asset space, reducing the operational risks of "fat-finger" errors and streamlining liquidity movement across competing platforms.
What was announced
Kraken and Mesh have launched a new integration designed to simplify the transfer of digital assets between cryptocurrency exchanges. The primary objective is to replace the traditional, friction-heavy process of selecting a network and manually copying long, alphanumeric wallet addresses—a method that has historically led to the permanent loss of funds if executed incorrectly. By providing a direct connection between platforms, the partnership aims to make crypto deposits as intuitive as traditional bank transfers.
When initiating a deposit on the Kraken website, users now see an "Another exchange" option alongside the standard address method. Selecting this opens a secure window powered by Mesh, where the user selects their source exchange and signs in using that platform’s existing credentials. Once authenticated, the user confirms the transfer, and the assets are sent on-chain directly to the Kraken deposit address.
A standout technical feature of this rollout is Mesh’s SmartFunding capability. This allows users to complete a deposit even if they lack sufficient balance in a specific asset. For instance, if a user intends to deposit 10,000 USDC but only holds 7,000 USDC at the source exchange, SmartFunding can automatically convert approximately 3,000 USDC worth of other holdings on that exchange to bridge the gap in a single transaction. While Kraken does not charge a fee for this service, users remain responsible for any withdrawal, network, or conversion fees imposed by the source exchange. At launch, the service supports connections from Coinbase, with mobile support and additional exchange integrations planned for the future.
"The traditional method of depositing crypto often involves selecting a network and manually copying long wallet addresses, a process prone to errors that can lead to permanent loss of funds. The new flow, powered by Mesh, aims to eliminate this friction by providing a direct connection between platforms."

The companies involved
Kraken is one of the world’s longest-standing and most prominent cryptocurrency exchanges. Since its inception, it has positioned itself as a core pillar of the digital asset ecosystem, focusing on security and professional-grade trading tools. Unlike many of its peers, Kraken has maintained a consistent brand identity without undergoing major corporate name changes or parent company restructuring, carving out a significant share of the global spot and futures market.
Mesh acts as a connectivity layer for the crypto economy, often described as a bridge between different platforms and wallets. By providing the infrastructure for secure authentication and asset movement, Mesh enables "embedded finance" within the crypto sector. The partnership also involves Coinbase as the initial source exchange. Coinbase is a publicly traded company and one of the largest cryptocurrency platforms in the United States, known for its user-friendly interface and extensive regulatory compliance efforts. Together, these entities are moving the industry toward a more connected environment where assets are no longer siloed within individual exchange ecosystems.
What this means
This move is a direct assault on the "walled garden" philosophy that has dominated crypto exchanges for a decade. By allowing users to pull funds directly from Coinbase, Kraken is acknowledging that the future of crypto liquidity is fluid rather than static. The introduction of SmartFunding is particularly aggressive; it effectively turns a competitor's exchange into a flexible wallet for Kraken users. This puts immense pressure on other major exchanges to either adopt similar open-connectivity standards or risk losing active traders who value speed and safety over platform loyalty. Watch for whether Coinbase reciprocates this integration or attempts to restrict Mesh’s access to maintain its own ecosystem boundaries.
