LAIQON AG and Amundi have launched a new active ETF that utilizes artificial intelligence to optimize returns against the MSCI Europe Screened benchmark. For fintech professionals, this marks a significant step in the commoditization of AI-driven alpha, moving complex machine-learning strategies from exclusive institutional mandates into a liquid, low-cost UCITS vehicle available to retail investors.

What was announced

The LAIQON European Equity AI Optimized Active UCITS ETF (ISIN: IE000L98FUF7) officially commenced trading on 18 August 2026, following a launch event at the Deutsche Börse in Frankfurt. The fund is now listed on major trading venues including Xetra, gettex, Tradegate, and LS Exchange, ensuring broad accessibility through standard banking platforms and trading apps for both retail and institutional clients.

The fund's strategy focuses on European large- and mid-cap shares, using an in-house AI engine developed by LAIQON. This system processes millions of data points, drawing on a historical dataset that reaches back to 1993 to identify market patterns. Unlike passive ETFs that seek to replicate an index exactly, this active ETF targets a tracking error of between 2 per cent and 5 per cent. This deliberate deviation from the MSCI Europe Screened index allows the AI to reallocate the portfolio on a daily basis, shifting weightings across individual securities, sectors, and countries to capture alpha.

Amundi serves as the fund partner, providing the structural backbone through its ETF-as-a-Service platform. While LAIQON manages the AI-powered investment strategy, Amundi handles the technical management and structuring on its white-label and active ETF platform.

"With this active ETF, both retail and institutional investors can now bring the benefits of our AI – which has been tried and tested over many years – into their portfolios – more easily than ever before. AI-supported portfolio management allows the alpha potential of individual securities to be systematically identified, enabling investors to benefit from outperformance,"

Christian Sievers, Chief AI Officer at LAIQON AG.

The companies involved

LAIQON AG, headquartered in Hamburg and Frankfurt, is an asset management firm specializing in the integration of artificial intelligence within investment processes. The group focuses on creating "Next Generation" investment products that bridge the gap between traditional active management and automated data analysis.

Amundi is Europe’s largest asset manager and a dominant force in the global ETF market. The firm offers a comprehensive suite of investment solutions and has increasingly focused on providing "ETF-as-a-Service" capabilities, allowing third-party managers to launch specialized products using Amundi’s regulatory and operational infrastructure. The company maintains an extensive corporate presence via its platform at https://about.amundi.com/.

Deutsche Börse, the venue for the fund's listing, is one of the world’s leading exchange organizations. Based in Frankfurt, it operates Xetra, the leading trading venue for ETFs in Europe. The exchange group provides the critical infrastructure for price discovery and liquidity that enables the trading of these new AI-driven instruments. What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed the evolution of AI in the wealth management sector and the shifting landscape of European asset management. In July 2026, we reported on the growing demand for automated investment tools when MDOTM Secures $27M Growth Equity to Scale AI Investment Platform for Global Wealth Managers. The institutional shift toward Amundi was also highlighted recently when the Nesta Trust Divests £120M from Northern Trust to Amundi Over Climate Commitment Rollback, signaling Amundi's strengthening position in the market. Additionally, the infrastructure supporting these digital-first financial products continues to modernize, as seen when Clearstream Unveils Next-Generation Digital Securities Infrastructure earlier this year.

What this means

This launch is a direct challenge to traditional active fund managers who have long justified high fees through the promise of alpha. By wrapping an AI-driven active strategy in a low-cost ETF structure, LAIQON and Amundi are squeezing the margins of legacy mutual funds. The 2% to 5% tracking error target is bold; it signals that the managers are confident enough in their AI to deviate significantly from the benchmark, a move that will either validate AI-led stock picking or highlight the risks of algorithmic "hallucination" in volatile markets. Watch for other mid-sized asset managers to follow suit by white-labeling their proprietary tech through Amundi’s platform.
